| Once more a funeral had brought us to the cemetery. This time my ever-present curiosity got the best of me. Anxiously I elbowed my way through the crowd and stepped into "that" room. It's one of those places that chill's the bones; a long corridor with windows on each side to look through. Each window faces a stone tub. It's a theater of its own. High on the wall it is inscribed with large letters: "please mind your wallet and cell phone, pickpockets are preying." In each section two men with white masks are busy working. A Mullah present observes their wok. One after the other they foam those passed away in the tubs and … Funerals in Islam follow specific rites. The burial of the corpse is preceded by a simple ritual involving bathing and shrouding the body, followed by a prayer. The main factor in washing the corpse is to physically cleanse it. Bathing a corpse is a part of the tradition of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and therefore a part of the Islamic religious law. The ritual includes pouring water and foam over the body. |
